Hot Cheeto Girl plays with a stereotype often put on Hispanic girls, but instead of pushing it away, it leans into it.
Shown as a troll, a reference to the iconic toy everywhere in the 90s, they were cute, scary and full of attitude. The troll wears a Selena t-shirt, shrimp hoop earrings, and holds a bag of Hot Cheetos with a Big Red close by, things that feel familiar to me when I was younger, especially growing up in San Antonio Texas.
The piece has humor, but it also comes from a real place. It takes something that’s been labeled from the outside and turns it into something owned, remembered, and carried with pride.
